AI Review helps you follow ISO GPS and ASME Y14

Review of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) According to ISO GPS and ASME Y14

Manufacturing companies face many challenges in ensuring that the details and tolerances in drawings are interpreted and read correctly. This becomes particularly important when drawings are interpreted between different suppliers and customers, as discrepancies can lead to production errors, delays, and increased costs.

To successfully translate geometric characteristics from a 3D model to 2D drawings, Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is used. It specifies the size, shape, orientation, and location of features on a part, as well as how these features relate to each other. This increases the complexity of the drawings and the demand for unambiguous systems.

To address these challenges and ensure consistent interpretation of drawings, global standards like the international ISO GPS (Geometrical Product Specifications) and the American standard ASME Y14 (Engineering Drawing and Related Documentation Practices) have been developed. ISO GPS consists of approximately 160 standards, with ISO 1101:2017 serving as a cornerstone that describes and regulates GD&T. The remaining standards are applied depending on the specific nature of the company’s products. For ASME Y14, GD&T is governed by ASME Y14.5.

Companies’ approaches to these standards can vary greatly, but an increasing number are moving towards compliance with ISO GPS.

How AI Review helps you with GD&T verification

Our review system, AI Review, assists you in your existing work with GD&T by verifying geometric symbols with tolerances. Deviations are communicated via a report with explanations, making it easy for the designer and reviewer to identify and understand what violates the standards. As a result, AI Review becomes a valuable support in your efforts to both comply with and maintain expertise in ISO 1101:2017, ASME Y14.5, and your own standard systems.

In collaboration with our customers, we continuously work to expand this support further. We also assist companies that are not yet working with ISO GPS and ASME Y14 but wish to get started.
